Whenever a matrimonial dispute arises between the parties, the first step is separation i.e. both the party started leaving separately. I personally believe this is a most essential part because during separation both the party got a realization in future they can leave alone or not, many of the cases both party during separation can realized the bonding between them and understand all the consequence and as a result they further decide to re continue their matrimonial tie.

In the other part law have provision of judicial separation. Some time both the party understand they can not enjoy their conjugal life for rest of the life, but they do not want to remove their social status as husband and wife, so they used to take judicial separation from the competent court. Even continue two years separation between the parties also a valid ground of divorce. Even for getting a mutual divorce at least one separation is primary condition as per law.
